《鋼鐵是怎樣煉成的》是前蘇聯作家尼古拉·奧斯特洛夫斯基所著的一部長篇小說，於1933年寫成。小說通過記敘保爾·柯察金的成長道路告訴人們，一個人只有在革命的艱難困苦中戰勝敵人也戰勝自己，只有在把自己的追求和祖國、人民的利益聯系在一起的時候，才會創造出奇跡，才會成長為鋼鐵戰士。

尼古拉·阿列克謝耶維奇·奧斯特洛夫斯基
1904年9月29日出生在烏克蘭沃倫省奧斯特羅格縣維里亞村的一個貧困家庭，他排行第五，初級教會小學畢業後，因家境貧寒不得不輟學。11歲便開始當童工。1919年進發電廠當司爐助手。1927年底，奧斯特洛夫斯基在與病魔做斗爭的同時，創作了一篇關於科托夫騎兵旅成長壯大以及英勇征戰的中篇小說。兩個月後小說寫完了，他把小說封好讓妻子寄給敖德薩科托夫騎兵旅的戰友們，徵求他們的意見，戰友們熱情地評價了這部小說，可萬萬沒想到，不幸的是，唯一一份手稿在寄給朋友們審讀時被郵局弄丟了。這一殘酷的打擊並沒有挫敗他的堅強意志，反而使他更加頑強地同疾病作斗爭。1929年，他全身癱瘓，雙目失明。1930年，他用自己的戰斗經歷作素材，以頑強的意志開始創作長篇小說《鋼鐵是怎樣煉成的》。小說獲得了巨大成功，受到同時代人的真誠而熱烈的稱贊。1936年12月22日，由於重病復發，奧斯特洛夫斯基在莫斯科逝世。
